Maj.-Gen. James Pattison Cockburn [1779-1847]
Was a topographical artist and student of Paul Sandby. As an officer in the Royal Artillery he served in several European countries all of which gave him the opportunity to paint scenic views and architecture and many of his drawings were engraved to illustrate some beautiful books on European subjects.
Maj.-Gen. Cockburn was commanding officer in Québec from 1826 to 1832 and some fine engravings of Québec City and Niagara Falls were published in 1833.
