The art of the engraved view. Collectively termed ‘gravure’ in French or ‘print’.
Etching, engraving, lithography, aquatint is the form of printing an image on paper.
The image first has to be ‘drawn’ by the engraver or lithographer who will copy and perhaps change the original work of a sketch by the artist.
An original lithography, or print on stone is when the sketch is created as a work of art on the ‘stone’. Hence lithograph means stone print and works on the principal that oil and water do not mix.
