When does  a painting become an illustration?

Many artists of Alpine scenery had their works engraved and also exquisitely coloured by the  highly skilled hand of those involved in the printing and production of such beautiful images of mountains using watercolour and gouache that they in turn can appear to be an individual painting?

It was not uncommon practice for amateur  artists to copy a chromolithograph whilst improving their technique, as shown in these two images  - see below Rowbotham, T.L. At the same time some magnificent books were illustrated in the main by wonderful chromolithographs which showed off not only the talent of the artist, but also the skill of the engraver or lithographer. See above and below
